Camille Picott @ annual Redwood Empire Chinese Association fundraiser

Posted on: February 20th, 2012 by Camille No Comments

Every year, I have the honor of helping the Redwood Empire Chinese Association (also known as RECA) raise money at their annual New Year Celebration. The New Year Celebration will feature a Chinese dinner, dragon dancers, cultural dancing, and Mandarin singing.

RECA is an amazing organization in Sonoma County. They offer adult  language classes, Mandarin pre-school, singing group, cultural dance, mahjong club, etc. They are raising money to support the organization and to build an multi-cultural center in Sonoma County. They have already raised 1 million of their 1.5 million target.

I will be selling copies of Raggedy Chan & Nine-Tail Fox and donating a portion of the proceeds to RECA.

Camille Picott guest author at “Breakfast & Books”

Posted on: February 4th, 2012 by Camille 4 Comments

On Friday, January 27th, I had the pleasure of being the guest author at Marguerite Hahn Elementary School for their Breakfast & Books program. This was an amazing event. About one hundred parents and children showed up to share a meal and celebrate reading. School volunteers laid out a beautiful spread of food, with everything ranging from homemade muffins, hot oatmeal, bagels, and fresh orange juice. I had the honor of reading a chapter of Nine-Tail Fox to parents and students while they enjoyed their meal.

New Version of Raggedy Chan – available now!

Posted on: December 20th, 2011 by Camille 2 Comments

For those of you already familiar with the “original” Raggedy Chan, you know it’s an illustrated novella with 40 full-color illustrations.

I recently made the decision to release a text-only version of the book. Why? A few reasons. First, with text-only, I was able to get the price of the print book down to $7.99. I really want to make my books affordable to readers. Secondly, the full color version has no distribution to online or brick-and-mortar stores. (There’s lots of detail behind this difficulty, which I can explain if anyone is interested.) By releasing a text-only version, I was able to get full distribution for the story. This story is dear to my heart, and I want to make it available to as broad an audience as possible.

I am looking at releasing the illustrated version for both Kindle Fire and Nook Color. Stay tuned!

My new short story, Warming Demon, is now available for free download at Smashwords! Check it out!

About Warming Demon:

In a world devastated by massive climate change, the Chinese government holds the key to terraforming distant planets. A handful of wealthy and academically gifted Chinese citizens are selected to journey by spacecraft and colonize a new world.

Humankind envies those chosen for the voyage. But for Senya, a part Chinese, part Caucasian six-year-old from Hong Kong, life in the cramped, interstellar society is lonely and miserable. She struggles to understand her mixed race and to find a place in her new home.

“Warming Demon” ~ Evolution of an E-book Cover

Posted on: October 23rd, 2011 by Camille No Comments

Here is the cover for my forthcoming free e-book, Warming Demon. It was created by artist Joey Manfre.

I had a lot of fun working on this cover with Joey. As usual, I gave him a rough idea of what I was looking for: target audience (adult), central theme of story (Warming Demon as a metaphor for global warming), etc. I left the rest up to his imagination. This was the initial concept that he came up with:

Notice how masculine this version is. The main character of the story is a little girl, and her voice is very feminine. I wanted the cover to convey some of that feminism. This was accomplished through the delicate oval surrounding the main graphic, plus the typesetting.

Since I am in no way a visual artist, I try not to “over instruct” when developing book cover concepts with Joey. This gives him the artistic freedom to be creative. I’m always amazed how he takes themes and transforms them into gorgeous works of art.

Warming Demon will be published before the end of the year as a free e-book.
