Writer’s View: Dark Currents by Lindsay Buroker

Posted on: May 2nd, 2012 by Camille 2 Comments

From Goodreads: It’s been three months since former enforcer Amaranthe Lokdon and the notorious assassin Sicarius thwarted kidnappers and saved the emperor’s life. The problem? Nobody knows they were responsible for this good deed. Worse, they’re being blamed for the entire scheme. With enforcers and bounty hunters stalking them, and the emperor nursing a personal hatred for Sicarius, it’s going to be hard to earn exoneration.

When Amaranthe’s team discovers mutilated bodies in the city aqueducts and a mysterious illness incapacitates thousands of citizens, she and Sicarius see an opportunity to solve the mystery and prove their loyalty. But they’ll have to defeat vengeful shamans, man-eating predators, and deadly mechanical constructs, all while dodging imperial soldiers who would rather kill them than accept their help.

Nobody said exoneration would be easy.

The Writer’s View:

This is the second installment in the Emperor’s Edge series by Lindsay Buroker. Lindsay is a talented indie author, and I love her stories. This book was no exception. It’s a non-stop adventurous romp with a lovable cast of characters in a nifty steampunk setting. You can check out my review of the first book in the series, The Emperor’s Edge, here. Read on…

Writer’s View: Angel Fire by L.A. Weatherly

Posted on: April 28th, 2012 by Camille 4 Comments

From Goodreads: Only Willow has the power to defeat the malevolent Church of Angels, and they will stop at nothing to destroy her. Willow isn’t alone, though. She has Alex by her side – a trained Angel Killer and her one true love. But nothing can change the fact that Willow’s a half-angel, and when Alex joins forces with a group of AKs, she’s treated with mistrust and suspicion. She’s never felt more alone…until she meets Seb. He’s been searching for Willow his whole life – because Seb is a half-angel too.

The Writer’s View

This is the second book in the Angel trilogy by L.A. Weatherly. I was absolutely gaga over the first book in the series, Angel Fire. I love the take on evil angels invading from an alternate plane. And I loved the relationship between Alex and Willow. I was so nuts to get my hands on this second book, Angel Fire, that I tried to buy it from an EU website. Unfortuantely, the internet is very smart, and it apparently knew I was not in the right country, and would not sell it to me! LOL. Read on…

Writer’s View: The First Days by Rhiannon Frater

Posted on: April 23rd, 2012 by Camille 6 Comments

From Goodreads: The morning that the world ends, Katie is getting ready for court and housewife Jenni is taking care of her family. Less than two hours later, they are fleeing for their lives from a zombie horde.
Thrown together by circumstance, Jenni and Katie become a powerful zombie-killing partnership, mowing down zombies as they rescue Jenni’s stepson, Jason, from an infected campground.
They find sanctuary in a tiny, roughly fortified Texas town.  There Jenni and Katie find they are both attracted to Travis, leader of the survivors; and the refugees must slaughter people they know, who have returned in zombie form.
Fast-paced and exciting, filled with characters who grab your heart, The First Days: As the World Dies is the beginning of a frightening trilogy.

The Writer’s View:

First, I am seriously frothing over this book. Incredible, awesome, amazing, da bomb, rad — there just are not enough adjectives in the English language to describe how great this book is.

Every once in a while, I come across a book where the setting and circumstance feel like they could be tomorrow’s reality. The First Days is the sort of apocalypse book I can see on the horizon, and makes me wonder if I should start saving for a bomb shelter or stockpiling guns. *grins* (The last book that did this was the Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler. Honestly, I was traumatized by that book, in a good way.) Seriously, if the zombie-pocalypse comes, I am buying a sh*t load of guns and moving to Texas. No one can take on Zombies like the Texans in The First Days. Read on…

The Writer’s View: The Iron King by Julie Kagawa

Posted on: April 19th, 2012 by Camille 7 Comments

From Goodreads: Meghan Chase has a secret destiny; one she could never have imagined.
Something has always felt slightly off in Meghan’s life, ever since her father disappeared before her eyes when she was six. She has never quite fit in at school or at home.
When a dark stranger begins watching her from afar, and her prankster best friend becomes strangely protective of her, Meghan senses that everything she’s known is about to change.
But she could never have guessed the truth – that she is the daughter of a mythical faery king and is a pawn in a deadly war. Now Meghan will learn just how far she’ll go to save someone she cares about, to stop a mysterious evil no faery creature dare face; and to find love with a young prince who might rather see her dead than let her touch his icy heart.

The Writer’s View:

I have heard so many amazing things about the Iron Fey series, I couldn’t wait to read the first one.  There were a few things I really liked: the opening chapters, with the blend of creepy magic and a teen’s high school struggles; the Iron Fey themselves, an uber cool blend of steampunk and magic; and Grimalkin, the talking cat. (I’m a cat person. I already think my cats speak to me, so encountering a talking cat in a novel wasn’t much of a stretch.) Read on…
